Chelsea come back from a three-week international break without a league win since August, and Xabi Alonso faces a lengthy injury list as a Bournemouth side who keep losing leads visit Stamford Bridge.
Kick-off: Saturday 10 October, 3pm UK time | Venue: Stamford Bridge | Referee: Sam Barrott
Three weeks is a long time to stew on a 3-0 defeat. Chelsea’s last game was that loss at Brentford on 18 September, and it left Alonso’s side 10th in the Premier League on seven points from five games, already eight behind leaders Manchester City. Two wins, a draw and two defeats is a modest return. What worries supporters more is that the Blues haven’t won a league game since beating Brighton 4-3 on 30 August.
There has been upheaval off the pitch too. Sporting director Laurence Stewart is leaving by mutual consent, and his duties are being shared between Joe Shields and Sam Jewell.
So Saturday matters. Chelsea are back home, where they’re unbeaten in three league games this season, and they face a Bournemouth side who sit 17th with three points and are still looking for their first league win.
A rematch with a familiar ending
Chelsea are unbeaten in nine Premier League meetings with Bournemouth, but that run has gone stale. The last three games all ended level, including a 2-2 at the Bridge on 30 December. The Cherries haven’t beaten Chelsea in the league since December 2019.
Don’t read too much into Bournemouth’s position in the table. They led in each of their first four league games this season without winning any of them, and have thrown away nine points from winning positions. They’re also strong travellers. Since that December draw in SW6, they’ve lost only one of 11 Premier League away games in 2026, according to Chelsea’s official pre-match figures.

Chelsea team news: a long list
Alonso speaks to the media at Cobham this afternoon, so expect confirmed team news later today. For now, this is what we know.
Joao Pedro is the biggest loss. He pulled out of the Brazil squad with a knee problem and is reportedly being treated by a specialist, with a return likely in late October. That hurts: he had three goals and three assists in four league appearances before the injury.
Cole Palmer is a doubt. The forward missed England’s camp and has reportedly been working on his fitness abroad with a rehabilitation coach. Thomas Tuchel was blunt about it, saying Palmer “misses way too many camps”, as reported by the Standard.
Moises Caicedo has managed only 14 league minutes all season because of a calf problem. He did get some minutes in the 2-0 defeat by Portsmouth in a behind-closed-doors friendly at Cobham last weekend, but Saturday may come too soon for him. Captain Reece James is also a doubt with a hamstring issue, and Jamie Gittens is out after hurting his ankle on England Under-21 duty.
There is some better news. Summer signing Marco Palestra has recovered from a quad injury and could make his Premier League debut. Back-up goalkeeper Mike Penders is training again, and striker Emmanuel Emegha, who hasn’t played a competitive game for Chelsea yet, is pushing to be involved.
Is this Estevao’s chance?
With Palmer and Joao Pedro out or doubtful, the obvious question is whether Estevao finally gets a start. The Brazilian has played just 23 Premier League minutes this season, all as a substitute. That’s a big drop for a player who scored eight goals in all competitions last term.
Reports in Spain have linked Barcelona with him, but Chelsea see the 19-year-old as untouchable. He also had a good international break, scoring and assisting in Brazil’s 4-0 friendly win over India. Alonso has insisted he’s part of the plan. “Este is ready, he’s training well,” the head coach said recently, as reported by football.london. The club’s documentary I Am Estevao arrives on CFC+ on 15 October, and a big performance on Saturday would make for good timing.
Predicted Chelsea XI (prediction only, not confirmed)
3-4-2-1: Martinez; Fofana, Lacroix, Colwill; Neto, Lavia, Henderson, Chavarria; Estevao, Rogers; Welbeck
Palestra and Emegha are options off the bench if they’re passed fit. This prediction will be updated once Alonso confirms his team news.
Prediction
Both sides have conceded plenty this season. Chelsea have scored 10 and let in 12 in five league games, and Bournemouth have yet to keep a clean sheet, so goals look likely. Bournemouth’s habit of letting leads slip, and the absence of Scott, give Chelsea the edge.
Speedline prediction: Chelsea 2-1 Bournemouth
