Manchester United have been hit by a major development involving highly rated academy prospect JJ Gabriel, with the 15 year old asking to leave the club.
Gabriel and his representatives have formally requested that his Manchester United registration be cancelled with immediate effect. If the request is approved through the required process, the young forward would be able to become a free agent.
The decision has come as a surprise at Manchester United, particularly because Gabriel had been involved in Michael Carrick’s first team plans during pre season.
The teenager had been expected to be part of the squad for Manchester United’s Carabao Cup meeting with Brighton, but he will not feature in the game. Questions had already started to emerge after Gabriel removed Manchester United related content from his Instagram account several days earlier.
JJ Gabriel was already being considered for the first team
Gabriel’s rapid rise had put him firmly on the radar at Old Trafford.
The youngster made his first team debut during pre season when he came on for Bryan Mbeumo against Atletico Madrid. His involvement with Carrick’s senior squad was another sign of the confidence Manchester United have in his ability despite his young age.

However, his age means there are specific rules surrounding his registration and future. Gabriel turns 16 on October 6 and cannot sign a scholarship agreement until then. He will also have to wait until he is 17 before he can sign a professional contract.
Under Premier League rules, a youth registration can only be cancelled when the club, player and parent or carer agree. If an agreement cannot be reached, the Premier League can make a binding decision.
