Bayern Are Not Losing Any Sleep Over This

Michael Olise has spent the last while being one of the most talked about names in European football, and honestly, it is easy to see why. Real Madrid have been circling, Premier League clubs are watching from a distance, and yet Bayern Munich are behaving like a club with absolutely nothing to worry about. According to Bacary Sagna, that calm is not an act.

Speaking to GOAL, the former France defender explained that Bayern’s financial position puts them in a different category to most clubs dealing with this kind of interest. They are not chasing transfer income to balance the books, so a big number on a piece of paper does not carry the same pull it might elsewhere.

Sagna also made a simpler point that is easy to overlook in all the transfer noise, Olise just seems like a genuinely good fit at Bayern. In his view, there is no obvious reason for either side to force a change right now.

The Record Breaking Bid That Never Actually Arrived

For a story with this much heat around it, the actual paperwork side has been surprisingly quiet. Real Madrid were repeatedly linked with a package in the region of €223m, roughly £192m or $259m depending on the exchange rate you use. Had that number ever landed on Bayern’s desk, it would have overtaken Neymar’s €222m move from Barcelona to Paris Saint Germain back in 2017 as the most expensive transfer in football history.

It never got that far. Real chose not to make a formal offer for Olise and instead put their resources into signing Yan Diomande from Ivory Coast. That leaves Olise without an obvious route into Madrid’s squad right now, though nobody in football would rule out this conversation restarting down the line.

How Olise Got Here

It is worth stepping back for a second, because Olise’s rise really has been remarkable. Born in London, he came through spells at Reading and Crystal Palace before earning his move to Bayern Munich, and Germany is where his career genuinely took off. He has become just as important for France as he has for his club, and his form throughout Les Bleus’ run to the 2026 World Cup semi final only pushed his profile even higher.

Former France striker Louis Saha has previously pointed to that journey, from Crystal Palace to being wanted by some of the biggest clubs on the continent, as a story worth paying attention to in its own right.

Why the Contract Changes Everything

Here is the part that really strengthens Bayern’s hand, Olise is signed until 2029. That single detail removes almost all urgency from the club’s side of this negotiation. They are under no pressure to sell, no pressure to negotiate, and no pressure to even entertain a conversation unless they choose to.

Bayern also has something to offer beyond stability. They are regular Champions League contenders, and that matters when you are trying to convince a player in his prime that staying put does not mean settling for less.

The People Inside the Club Keep Saying the Same Thing

What has made this saga a little unusual is just how openly Bayern’s own people have addressed it. Honorary president Uli Hoeness said he laughed a lot when he first heard the Real Madrid rumours, and made his point in typically blunt fashion, joking that even an offer from the Emperor of China would not get Bayern talking about selling Olise. Sporting director Max Eberl has taken a slightly gentler tone, saying he understands why the story generated so much attention given the mix of the World Cup, Real Madrid and Bayern all being involved, but that he considers the matter settled from Bayern’s side.

Bayern CEO Jan Christian Dreesen added a more forward looking note recently, confirming the club will sit down and properly discuss Olise’s long term future next summer. That is a useful detail, because it tells you this is not a closed book, it is simply parked for now.
